Even if you don't believe in religion, it's not a waste to study it. Religion has been an integral part of humanity since the beginning and has shaped civilizations. To understand human history you need to understand religion, and vice versa. You can read the New Testament all you want, but if you don't understand the historical context of the time period it was written it, you won't fully understand it.
