Terrible backwards century that tries to go back to some idealized past, especially the English, going from Turner to the pre-rafaelite stuff, terrible. Hopefully the end of this century redeemed it.
It's utterly ridiculous how the early 19th century is supposed to hold anything against the Venetian school, 17th century Spanish school, Dutch golden age, école de Fontainebleau, etc... Subject, colour, composition, representation, technicality, the 19th century is basically backwards in all aspect.
