Those big 30mm cannons are not exactly rapid-firing, nor is their range exceptional - in fact it's about 200m before the shells start to drop like mad.
Now imagine cruising at leisurely 300kph while those F4-Phuckers scream by you well past the mach. Luckily, back then the AI couldnt hit the hangar doors with that ugly vulcan the F4 has - from inside the hangar.
So in the end they went bingo and headed off rtb at 30k ft with me trundling along the other way at 2000m.
