This banding is occurring not because of a low resolution gradient, but because the gradient is so shallow that there aren't enough colors to make it smooth. Those steps are the smallest possible color changes in normal sRGB space.
The only actual option to fix it is dithering, and I haven't bothered figuring that out. Maybe higher diety can fix your sins.
