I use Cinnamon and have mine on auto-hide, there's still a pixel of it that's visible even when hidden, but I have it set to transparent when at the desktop, so that I can enjoy my wallpapers without anything cluttering it up (an unclutter to hide the mouse cursor, of course)
wallpapers are also cycling constantly every 20 seconds
