You're technically right with most of the history you're describing, but you don't seem to get that the "attention whoring" was always contained to the context of desktops. At no point in the history of desktop threads was the anime spam as bad as it was when they got deleted. There weren't even desktops being posted, which is the key difference between the type of posting that got them banned and the partially off-topic posting that was allowed to continue in the past.
