A few months ago I read a biography/collection of all (most) of Van Gogh's works. One of my favorites was this self portrait which he painted toward the end of his life. It was the only self portrait where he showed his self mutilation. He apparently sent the portrait to his mother saying something to the effect of
>even though I've lived in Paris and all these cities, I'm still at heart a countryside peasant; Probably not as useful as one, though.
He ended up killing himself shortly after. Right after I'd finished the book, I took a vacation to Norway, where I actually got to see this self portrait in person. It was surreal bros.
