We stayed in Osaka at the time, but it's only a 40 minutes ride to Kyoto, so I'd definitely suggest staying in Kyoto and moving down to Osaka to see what's there
We also had okonomiyaki (and yakisoba) there done on a little hibachi while sitting at the bar, the owners were really nice it was really nice
Living in France there's almost no chance we'll find authentic japanese restaurants though (outside of sushi and maybe ramen), there are some nice ones in the capital, but they're pretty rare and expensive
The okonomiyakis are made differently in Osaka/Kyoto than in Hiroshima though, in the Hiroshima style you also get soba noodles in the middle of the dough!
