Don't go open mechanical, you'll get shoehorned into something you don't want to do. Don't go open general, you'll just go security forces. Find a job, and go to the recruiter with a plan. They will lie to you.
I went reserves, I like it. My personality fits in well with the job environment, its very unforgiving, but you learn a lot. There is a metric fuckload of bureaucracy. C-17s are really easy to maintain from what I hear, a lot of stuff is under warranty. Do it for the benefits, do it for the free college, and if you are really brainwashed, do it for your country.
