Oakland County native here. Basically Michigan is home to a lot of natural beauty. If you like going out into the woods and being around nature, you'll definitely have fun. We have A LOT of lakes. Like, seriously, we're apparently the state of a thousand lakes for a reason. So many lakes, that it's customary for a teenager to graduate high school with a driver's license and a boating license.
From the southern part of the state, you have the big hubs like Detroit and Lansing. Detroit's kinda coming back, but there's still the gloom of the housing collapse and the American automotive market bottoming out, so you can still see and feel the former glory hanging around. Downtown by the river's still pretty lively, though. If you're into anime and manga, check out Youmacon whenever the end of October rolls around. Fun stuff.
The farther north you go, the more likely it'll be to be covered in farmland. Once you hit the tip of the mitten, you have Traverse City, renowned for its cherry festivals in the spring. On the opposite side, you have the ferry that'll take you over to Mackinaw Island. This place is a Big Deal (tm) to most Michiganders, since it's home to probably the best fudge in the world. No cars allowed on the island, though. Hence the ferry.
To the North you have the UP. The UP is basically Canada at some points and Wisconson at others. If you want to see Michigan's biggest in-joke, watch a film called Escanaba in da Moonlight. The punch line of it is 'Haha, Yoopers."
Oh, yeah. That's a thing. If you're North of the bridge connecting the upper and lower peninsulas, you're a Yooper. If you're South? You're a troll. It's really rare to hear that nowadays, but it's a thing. The UP is basically unspoiled wilderness for miles and probably the best deer hunting you'd ever find. Deer season can be pretty big around here. Especially since the deer are kind of a pest species since we wiped out the native wolf population.
Here's a nice shot of Higgens Lake.
