I mostly either use icon packs that make everything completely white, or just text. You'd probably want something with alright more muted colours to fit the background. Maybe try delta, though that might actually be a bit too much.
As for the widget, I didn't consider readability, so the shadow might actually be a good idea, I'm just personally more into minimalistic homescreens, so if I need info displayed, I usually just put it in a box.
