I'm thinking of moving to Japan next year. I work from home 360 days of the year and I speak and read enough Japanese to communicate with people online. I have been saving up for a house in the United States but the prices here are outrageous and we're in a multi decade real estate bubble right now. Before my mortgage would be paid off it would be very likely that the value of the house would fall. But in Japan they have significantly more houses than people. I could just buy a house outright there with what I have saved. And in the worst case scenario where the entire thing needs to be bulldozed and replaced with a new house, it would still cost the same as buying a dump in the US.
I'm pretty worried about trying to find a way to live there long term. I've done a lot of research on their real estate market but not as much on immigration. From what I understand even if I own a home there it's practically impossible to stay for more than 2 years at a time without getting married to a Japanese. I probably won't be doing that.
It's not too heavy. But it's what's been on my mind lately.
