Hey anon, there's been a lot of great stories and advice in this thread already, so I'll just share my story and advice as well.
A couple of years back my grandfather had a brain haemorrhage, and was hospitalized for almost a year. He was a very intelligent man and had achieved much in his life. After the accident though he was (for the lack of better words) a shadow of the man I had known all my life.
I was afraid of being with him, while he was not being able to speak. Although I thought I could see in his eyes he knew what to tell us, he just couldn't sound the words.
I stayed away from him, trying to cherish the idea of the man I had known before, but this was a mistake.
My advice would be to visit him frequently if possible, to sit beside him and make your peace with what happened. Everybody's situations are different, but I hope you'll have time to prepare for his passing, the time I didn't allow myself, and to find peace in that.
I'm hoping for the best for you and your grandfather, and I hope you'll find a streak of light in the dark.
