A Boy And His Dog started out as a short story by Harlan Ellison. He later expanded it into a longer story, then it became a movie. It's hard to go wrong with either the written or the movie ... each has it's strengths & weaknesses. Movie (for me) was creepier because the visuals & set were well-interpreted ... Jason Robards was fucking dangerously evil in the movie.
For a writer, this is one of many examples out there where the time frame of a near-future apocalypse setting has somewhat dated the story hard since we are pretty much living in its time frame now. A cautionary tale for carefully choosing set & setting, especially if you are attempting a timeless work.
