However, life "began" for me at the age of 36 (when my parents died.) I was also a total loser, still living with them. Then, they finally died of old age.
That was the kick in the butt I needed, since at that point I really had to do something; It was either start walking south, to live on a beach as a bum, or off myself. Instead, I just started working any part time jobs I could. Then moved on to full time jobs, then a better full time job.
Now, at 47, you'd not really know that I totally blew the 18 years after graduating from High School (until my parents finally died.) I don't really seem farther behind than other 47 year olds. I ended up getting married and everything, after not having dated for 17 years.
So my best suggestion would be: Pretend like your parents just died. Then do something.
Otherwise, you'll be 36 in the twinkling of an eye. Your parents might not be as old as mine were, so you might be stuck for even longer.
