Sugar is the mind killer, even though your brain does require a level of glucose to function, you DO NOT need to consume sugar in any form. Sugar(s) and sweetener(s) spike you blood sugar causing a rush of energy, which might actually be a bare minimum plateau for the abusers of sugar, followed by a crash. Constantly abusing your pancreas to secrete insulin is detrimental to your body as a whole, insulin resistance comes before diabetes and alzheimers, and it's unsustainable to your liver, which processes most non-glucose sugars. Most foods have sugar added to them, and fruits and vegetables are designed and grown to be sweet, as well a many processed meats are injected with sugar. Basically your food selection is very limited if you care about avoiding sugar.
Carbs are alright, you can make due on carbs but you need to consume fats. I personally follow a 0 carb, carnivore diet with one meal of 50% carbs and a 48 hour fast but that's me. What makes carbs pretty untenable by themselves is the fat soluble vitamins and the lack of usuable Omega 3 and 6 fats. Vitamin A, K and E are absorbed when you consume fats, cholesterol is used to repair your damaged cells as well as make new ones and the 'cholesterol' LDL and HDL are proteins to ferry the cholesterol around your body. LDL cholesterol can become oxidized, damaging the cell walls of your arteries where calcium comes in to patch it up so you don't bleed to death or rupture a vein. The key thing here is to avoid oxidizing your LDLs with highly reactive agents.
