I feel like there are multiple forms of depression, so I don't know exactly what your going through OP, but I have had depressive tendencies on and off. For me, i believe the root cause is that i have what i feel are many superficial relationships but very few intimate relationships, not even with my close loved ones. However, when i really reach out to a friend and simply converse with them at a very intimate level, those depressive thoughts vanish. So I would say that most cases of depression can be alleviated by making at least one good, honest, real, and deep friend to convey all your doubts, fears, your past, your perceptions, anything really that you feel is too intimate for the public. That baggage isn't healthy, and catharsis is the best panacea for sadness (and many other unhealthy states of mind as well).
