Quite a bit more are sad because of something tragic happening in their lives, having essential needs neglected, loss, or trauma from youth that has remained unresolved.
Chemicals to assist can absolutely be useful. But what they really give you is a window of time to start talking to people and exploring recent events or events in your past that may be causing these feelings. Using that space to resolve these events, learn crucial life lessons, and add skills to the box of coping tools we all carry around is what really needs to be done. Only a small portion of those experiencing depression need lifelong chemical intervention. And maybe when trying to explore your past you don't find anything and indeed it is your brain tormenting itself for no reason. But the majority of the time there is a very real reason and you just have to find it.
