Landed in Tokyo and explored for a few days, bought a pass to use the bullet train for a week (which isn't that expensive at all, all things considered) and made it to Kyoto in about half a day. I spent a couple of days there, then went Osaka for about the same amount of time and back to Tokyo. If you're going for a week and want to see more than just one area, flying into Tokyo and buying a pass for the bullet train to take you to other areas of Japan is probably your best bet because of how centrally located Tokyo is. All that said, even a week in just Tokyo wont leave you anywhere near short on things to see
