Anon, you might like this dithering technique too, the results are pretty comfy (the attached image is not a wallpaper, sorry). Thanks for this nice thread :)
"I filled a layer with a checkerboard pattern and set the blending mode to overlay. Then i tweaked the opacity and used the curves filter to adjust contrast until it looked right.
To get the pattern, make a new 2x2 pixel image and make the top left and the bottom right pixel black. Then select the whole image and copy it. You can now use it with the bucket tool by selecting the clipboard as the pattern source."
