Everyone in California calls everything north of the Grapevine "Northern California" (except maybe the weirdos in the boonies north of Redding). It doesn't make sense geographically, but that's the way it is.
I've spent years and years living in both SoCal (714) and NorCal (916), so I'm pretty sure about this stuff.
