to OP and the anon who lost his wife, you have my condolences, the loss of a loved one can never be truly fixed. I can't say that I've felt the loss of a loved one in quite the same way as loosing a significant other, but I feel sympathy for those who have.
to OP, I know how you feel. I have a cat now, and he is my best friend, always coming up to me, annoying of course but it is totally endearing at the same time, he is getting on in his years, I can't stand to think of what it will be when my companion is gone.
