Ok, as a mathematician (well ok a PhD student maths), I can say with certainty that while this relation is true insofar as it goes, in reality the relationship between the sciences (physics especially) and maths is a kind of symbiosis. We provide the equipment to solve the problems they could not otherwise solve and they in turn provide the reason for our existence. Without physics, what is the point in maths, really?
My POV is skewed somewhat however by the fact that I work on what is essentially a physics PhD despite a background in maths.
