However, if I may play devil's advocate here for a second, the re-purposing of religious symbols is nothing new. In fact the cross itself, like much of Christianity, is supposedly taken from Paganism, where it was a phallic symbol representing fertility.
Therefor, symbols ultimately mean whatever a society uses and interprets them to mean.
For example, when most of us in the west see a swastika, it's not Hinduism, Buddhism, nor Jainism that spring to mind first.
If as a culture we continue to use the inverted cross as a symbol of pretest against Christianity rather than one of humility before God, than that is what it comes to mean.
