Ralph basically becomes Vanellope's brother, and all brothers have a strong protective instinct toward their little sisters that's accompanied by adoration.
This similarly applies to the paternal instinct with daughters, and I think it's reasonable to say that they often overlap, which is what made this movie so powerful for me.
I'm an only child = totally unsatisfied fraternal instinct, and I'm hormonally maturing = developing paternal instinct.
And all this is serious, in a totally innocent way.
