Dota looks better graphicly, but as the other guy stated before, LoL is easier to learn. I play LoL most of the time, but I tried Dota and it was hard like hell. I mean, I know very well how to play a moba, it's just the combination of all the new heroes and not knowing the entirety of the mechanics. Dota for me is tough. But as I said before Dota has way better graphics, which is a huge plus for me.
Both communities are great though. Both games have their flamers, tough talking noobs, people who refuse to communicate in any other language than their own, etc.
I also come from a very long list of MMORPG's and I can tell you a MOBA is nothing like pvp in an mmo. It's totally different. so you shouldn't compare the two
