Eccleston's representation of the Doctor was my absolute favourite of the renewed series. He showed that while yes, Doctor Who as a show is at heart very light and mostly about the fun of it all, that the show could indeed carry some very heavy and dark undertones.
Tennant was definitely a good addition to the cast as well, he brought the fun back to the series, but he could also absolutely do emotional and brooding when he needed to. Unfortunately it also seemed that the more gritty tones they were trying to go for with Eccleston were just a bit of an experiment, and they decided to make things... not necessarily less dark, but a little more fantastical with Tennant.
Honestly though, I just really can't like Smith as much as the other two. He's competent as the fairy tale Doctor, but whenever he needed to get serious or sad and give out those "powerful" speeches, I just couldn't get my head into it because he just always looks and acts so goofy.
Looking forward to the Capaldi Doctor, I think it could bring back what was lost with Nine
