It was only after we plundered Forerunner sites (interestingly, the same move that made physically inferior Prophets win in the San'Shyuum-Sangheili War) and developed a much better space force as well as mass-produced Spartans that we really started kicking ass. As for the Covenant respecting us, it varies from source to source. Some writers had them see us as equals while others wrote than an Elite would rather fight with their fists than pick up a dropped Assault Rifle, such was their contempt for humans.
