The woman to the left is a sorceress called Takiyasha, her father was a warlord who was killed in an uprising against the emperor. After his death, she lived in the abandoned ruins of her father's house, planning revenge. The man in the middle is called Mitsukuni, the protagonist of the story, who is tasked by the emperor to eradicate any surviving traitors.
One site says the man to the right is Mitsukuni's assistant. Another says he was about to duel with Mitsukuni; Takiyasha hoped to scare Mitsukuni and break his focus by summoning a skeleton, but the plan backfired as Mitsukuni was brave, while his opponent dropped his sword out of fear.
