The depth of the box (flat plasma panel, remember) is because it also contained a computer-controlled microfiche projector to allow courseware to display images in color or too complicated for the 512×512 panel. (Remember seeing movies or TV with the stupid Hollywood effect where computers show text coming up slowly but ridiculously complicated images pop up all at once and you call BULLSHIT? Well, not entirely.)
