For me, I think of death whenever I see this picture. I don't personally believe in an afterlife, but looking at this makes me imagine a realm you visit the moment you die. There is nothing but a road, its end obscured by fog, into which you must walk. More than death, it simply represents the uncertainty of the beyond for me.
