Some serious shit is happening here but i can't exactly figure what. Care to explain? The bird will die? What is that weird stuff in the jar? Why is that little girl almost exposing her nips in front of older men?

An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump is a 1768 oil-on-canvas painting by Joseph Wright of Derby, one of a number of candlelit scenes that Wright painted during the 1760s.
