These are actually "planets" spread evenly out with different masses growing from left to right and up to down.
It's like gravity but in this particular case the force doesn't decrease according to the inverse square law, but e^(-1/distance). The sum of the forces is then calculated for every pixel.
It still wasn't very spectacular until I decided to have some fun and weighed the resulting forces from 0 to 2^24 then used the most significant byte to represent red, the middle blue and the least significant green.
The other pictures either use a different function for the distance or the planets have different masses.
