first off you want to choose a launcher, nova or apex, i think /wg/ leans more towards nova, it's pretty easy to use, apex is a bit more finicky but has some neat options iirc, maybe novas better now , i just stick to what i know which is apex. there are others but fuck me if i even know what they are.
so install whichever one you want and now you can upgrade your icon packs and shit, up to you how you do it but i like to start with the wallpaper and work from there. wallpaper as the scaffold, then you decide how many icons you want, how you're going to streamline it and just generally fuck with the settings to suit you. you don't really need to ROM either unless you want to, most of what you see can be achieved without ROM
the idea is to just get your phone streamlined, uncluttered and user friendly with a nice aesthetic.
For widgets use zooper/zooper widget pro and just search and ask around for other ones.
the music player you see the most will be the power amp widget pack
get creative and shit.
