First distro install, using GNOME Classic on Debian, did it all yesterday and have absolutely no clue as to what I am doing. Any advice is very welcome, but you may need to elaborate on how to accomplish some things, or at least make it so i can google them. Cheers in advance

the boxes is Fences, there are more than four gross icons in that fence too..
I do a lot of multi tasking with busy programs for my job and often have a lot more than one program open so its easier for me to have the task bar locked up with my programs on, and to keep it simple with few addons, plugins, widgets etc..
I keep most of them on my phone
I don't generally have a lot of spare time for adjusting my fonts and skins for maximum sex appeal and productivity
It probably isn't the best I could do but its the best I can do for me at the moment and still keep it looking tidy and orderly

i really fucking appreciated your rating and constructive criticism though

Hm, guys I've been trying my hand at babbys 1st rice and although I have http://neiio.deviantart.com/art/Case-7-VS-449178447 working dandy and editing the .msstyles lets me change some fonts and such, it doesn't affect icons, explorer or the start menu.

There is probably a setting in Fences that will allow you to do that. I'd also recommend seeing if you can get some icons for the programs you use.
On a side note though, having task manager pinned to your taskbar is slightly redundant because you can right click the taskbar and start it from the context menu that pops up.

I'm not exactly an expert in editing .msstyles but it may not be part of the Window Metrics/Fonts and such but part of the settings with the taskbar (Within the .msstyles, not that actual taskbar settings). Either that or it's part of explorer in which would make it part of the shell.
You can mod your shell but I would highly recommend against it because if you're going to do it you better know what you're doing.

Themes don't affect icons, you need seperate files for it and you can either change them manually or with a third party program. Not that hard really, and it would take you literally a minute to figure this out if you were smart enough to use google.

Uh, only now I notice I didn't actually explain my problem was with the default font being much too small and changing the .msstyles seems to affect a lot of things like contextual menus and applications, but not the start menu, explorer or filenames.

Regardless I now have some more time so I'll see what I can find on this.

I feel like anons miss out on unity a lot. The way I usually combat this is by picking a font/color palette. The Ubuntu font is always a nice pick for me since I think it looks nice. A lot of anons also have no idea what the fuck it means to pick a proper palette. Pick out a few key hexcodes and stick with them. Lastly, USABILITY > CUSTOMIZATION. Do you know why you keep setting up that sweet rainmeter desktop with icons and shit and slowly let it rot over time? Then your left with your PC half customized a couple months down the road. Its because that garbage you scrambled together is a pain in the ass to use, a much bigger one than default windows. So for god sakes, if your removing key elements of the windows environment. You better have a sleek, easy way that's on par or a better way to access it compared to windows.

I enjoy the window tiling systems some people show, could I set it so that for example it opens ff, foobar and irc on startup following a given pattern, then other windows opened follow different positioning?
