I mean, with all of the different kinds of bladed weapons that exist in the real world that facilitate varied fighting styles, it would be surprising if nobody in the star wars universe developed variations of the standard lightsaber.
Its actually the animation of the blade that bothers me a little, not because I think it looks bad, but it serves no purpose other than to try to make it fresh.
