As for the program, I use Blender. It's an open source, free, 3d modelling program.
Blender has a bit of a learning curve, like any creative program, but once you get the hang of it, you can get along fine.
From what I know, Illustrator is mainly used for 2d designs. Mainly flat graphics, not 3d renders. I'm not too familiar with the program (yet), so I wouldn't really know if it supports 3d all that well. I'm pretty sure it doesn't though.
Not to shoot down Illustrator or anything, it's a perfectly good program, and it would be pretty useful to learn if you're wanting to do some creative art.
I do use photoshop for post processing on all my renders though.
But yeah, that's a little run down of what I use.
If you want some help, I could maybe try to do some youtube tutorials some time if I can find a good capture program for it.
