I was looking for ways to rice my desktop.
Thinking about running Ubuntu, but I'm skeptical.
Any advice?

Ubuntu is the best step into the world of lunix, because you can do here everything without the need to use the terminal. But you will love the terminal. Trust me. Then you will learn bash, maybe a programming language and you will change to archlinux. You will hack more, get fad, get antisocial, but you will have at least the fucking perfect system. Then you will install gentoo and fully fade out of reality.

You have now 2 options:

a) Stay at your mac, keep friends, get bitches
b) Get the perfect system

You must choose.

Depends on how much you know about linux and how to use it, it's the easiest distro to learn though.

Go for it, but for true rice you need to go with a WM rather than a DE, which means you'll be doing a lot with the terminal

For the best looking linux distro, i'd say Fedora 21 gnome, in terms of simplicity, its easy to use but get ready to be best friends with the terminal

I'd say, boot ubuntu from usb stick.There is a live-cd at their homepage for this.Then you can try it, play with it, destroy it - its just an OS on your stick. If you like it, you can install it using this usb stick very easy too.

Note: Many lunix distros have those .iso images for usb sticks/live-cd's, so does Fedora, Mint, etc.

openSUSE 13.2 KDE is probably the best distribution is really easy to use without having to use the terminal, it has extreme functionality and heavily customizable and above all its stable

i just recently got a mac, and had been looking to try ricing it up a bit.

will be staying tuned in this thread.

also, i loaded up ubuntu because i didnt actually have osx on it (got the thing for $230. spent a total of $600~. thing was totally nonfunctional
when i finally got osx, i really missed ubuntu
