this picture is referencing two distinct human drives, and the ambivalence of experiencing both simultaneously. See the conflicting yet -primary- motives in the bottom left.
For one, there is the drive to find a mate, as referenced by the female, human, subject. The bird (hope) suggesting that one should not give up on being 'found' in her search for her counterpart.
She is expressing a different drive however, that of self-definition through resentment towards failed relationship(s), and the artists' commentary on the self-destructiveness of such an attitude, as seen through the reversed gun barrel and targeting sight. This point may be further seen through the multiple (successive?) plasters on her chest.
Ultimately, this is about the conflict of losing faith in the possiblity of union, yet still being unable to distance yourself from the possibility of it happening, and the resentment that even though you may feel that you will never trust or be open again, as a human, you will, out of truth or desperation. This inevitability of making your emotional state a moot point gives rise to the self-destructiveness expressed by the artist.
