I don't know linux rice, but seems easier than windows because of flexibility. . .And I think it has to be more ways than making our own skins from scratch with AVE.

Decided to switch it up a bit.
Finally think I might be getting the hang of ricing.
Now, if only I could figure out how to remove titlebars but keep borders in xfwm4.

remove the buttons and set the title font to 0 in window manager settings, then find whichever decorations you want to edit with gimp in usr/share/themes/ or that's how i did it anyway...

I'd suggest you take more time to learn about it before ricing Linux hard. The OS and kernel info are pretty much what you need. Dual boot and learn your way around until you understand it, thats just my opinion

You should really start with the basics.
Install virtualbox on windows and download Ubuntu, Xubuntu or Mint iso and install it in a virtual machine. From there on walk your first Linux steps. Once you have the basics theming and ricing isn't hard at all.

very minimal amount. basically to do linux, you need to have a willingness to learn.

when you look up how to do something, odds are you'll get a step-by-step tutorial.
>read it all the way through before doing. make sure you understand it, DON'T blindly follow shit without understanding exactly what you're doing.
>learn recursively, if you don't understand a word, or concept, look it up (probably on the arch wiki), so that you can understand the idea or concept you're reading.
>man pages are your friend.
also for a quickie command line tutorial, i'm pretty sure codeacademy has a course for it. free and shit.

The desktop is cycling every hour between wallpapers I picked myself depending on weather conditions and time of day.

The top and bottom sections displaying all kinds of information are not overlapped by maximized windows.

The bottom bar with the icons doesn't have shortcuts, they are the running applications.

The volume bar turns into a media player widget if any media player is running.

Because your terminal wasn't wide enough to fit it all on one line so it wrapped around
-t disables that
You could also just resize your terminal to be wide enough before running it

Hey guys I'm currently in the middle of ricing, and have a few questions. Does anyone know any other places to find decent visual styles besides Deviant Art? I've looked through most of them for windows 8 and not too many really look appealing to me.

Also as far as music players are concerned I want to make the switch to foobar, but I dont really have any experience with customizing it and making it look appealing. Does anyone know of any guides/walkthroughs that lay it out "for dummies"?

I also want to change my icons, but (admittedly) since I'm a bit dense at navigating Deviant Art I seem to always run into the same 3 or 4 icon packs. Would anyone mind sharing in their opinion what some good icons are and where/how to find them? I probably will need to know a few more things here and there, but for now I just want to get these three things out of the way before moving on to other elements. Sorry if the "new guy" tone of the post is killing the vibe of the thread though, but anything I cant quite wrap my head around by myself I figure is worth asking here.

I still haven't read anything tangible, anything else than "I don't like it".

The purpose of this layout is to be as informative as possible, taking away as little screen real-estate from maximized windows as possible. For this reason it doesn't even have design-elements as such, even the half circle shapes you see at the drive sections are read/write indicators, so they blink on disk activity (left half green on reading, right half red on writing).

This isn't "rice", it's an infobar on the top, and a dock, a volume/media control applet and network activity applet at the bottom I would like to "rice", I just wish /wg/ would stop being useless, and start being constructive, maybe suggest something I haven't thought of yet.

If I'd need shitpost-level critique, I'd ask /b/.

Just don't open the fucking thumbnail. For your convenience, I won't change the wallpaper so you can easily recognize my pics by the thumbnail, because I'm a nice guy, but I won't stop asking for suggestions that might give me improvement ideas.
