As for soldiers, war is never easy to judge or categorize, ever. There's no point in sorting belligerents into "good" and "bad" categories. When you're talking about individual soldiers, the best thing to do is to just respect them as warriors, no matter which flag they fought for. Unless they were out and out war criminals, they fought, and are therefore of the same cadre as the men we hail as heroes simply because they fought for our flag, even if they committed similar atrocities as the opposing side.
Or, in the wise words of a certain character in Black Hawk Down, "It's just war". Don't think about it too hard.
