Running a hot system is not going to shorten the longevity of the components any worse than power cycling the processor every day like some people do. Rapid heating and cooling are far more damaging than consistent temperatures unless you pass the thermal rating, which im not doing.

personal anecdote that is mostly worthless other than to me : My AMD k-6 ran with a passive cooler on it reaching about 70c idle and 95c full usage, until this year : it was still working, I just donated it. even overclocked it was only 450mhz and really too slow for most anything.
