>>6614782I'm an atheist, but from a practical standpoint, if you practice the sort of washed out religion of America today that I grew up with (where you go to church and are told to love thy neighbor then talk shit about Mexicans or drug addicts with your fellow parishioners after the service and go back to your nice house while some guy sleeps in a dumpster by the mini mart next to your chapel), religion gets you social status, a robust support network of friends and benefactors who will help bail your ass out in the case of catastrophic life events and the mental reward of thinking you're a righteous person for little more than the cost of getting to church and maybe 3 hours a week. So. Not really stupid from a practical perspective.
