If you want to stick with xfce, just learn how it's config works, then go for a concise, unified look.
You also don't have to stick with xfce, you can try out MATE, or other DEs, or even just use a window manager (i3, awesome, openbox)
This is my desktop, I'm using i3 but I'm still using xfce-panels
