moot ran the site for a long time and it hardly ever broke even. the single donation run (he had to do because it would otherwise have shut down) only covered the legal fees moot had to pay for a bunch of incidents.
when it comes to ads, the site is a nightmare. no-one wants to advertise on here.
moot gave away the site because he wanted to move on with his life. he gave the site to the single person he trusted to be able to run the site WITHOUT changing too much. hiro did that so far.
people need to understand that, just because a site is great it doesn't mean it makes money. 4chan, at least historically, hardly ever made money. youtube is the same, currently operating at a loss.
if you have a site like 4chan, unattractive to advertisers that get's visited by so many people, it's hard to do the right thing. either try to make it financially viable and alienate the community, or don't and get financially fucked
