He does a lot of redraws, which is something that many artist do.
The only real argument I saw that stands against Ilya is that he used to sell (not sure if he still does) the redraws. The argument comes from whether or not it's okay to sell someone else's IDEA, redrawn in your own style.
I remember seeing a comparison picture that was trying to paint Ilya in a bad light, it was a picture of Hermoine and the drawn version and I looked at it in disbelief and said to myself "this is why those tumblr retards never get good, they think that using reference and redraws are somehow cheating or bad"
If you ask any artist on how to improve, they'll tell you to study and USE reference as much as possible. Of course there is a possibility of becoming too reliant on reference but that's a different story.
tl;dr using reference and redraws doesn't mean you're tracing and there's countless video proof of no tracing to be seen.
