The smaller scope, not a story about saving the world but about one person making it in life was something I really appreciated and wish I saw more of in games. I liked Hawke and I found all the companions fairly interesting. I enjoyed the art style and more animated combat. Music was pretty great too. The attitude system where Hawke's lines would change based on your dialogue choices was something I missed in later bioware games.
But I totally see why people don't like it, repeated environments, lack of variety, like 4 voice actors doing every single non party member NPC, the departure from the old school RPG style gameplay of Origins and the lackluster ending are all stuff that hurt the game pretty bad.
