Each one has its own pros/cons, and I'll list a few of the most significant ones to me.
Debian is very simply to setup and maintain, and is focused on stability. Of course, this means that your packages are generally outdated, but it just werks.
Arch, on the other hand, is difficult to setup and requires a decent amount of interest to learn about in order to successfully maintain properly. Also, pacman is much faster than apt-get or aptitude, and the AUR is extremely convenient. The downsides to arch are obviously less stability compared to debian, and it is also much more difficult to setup.
I use debian on my school laptop, because I want something that is easy to setup, won't randomly break on me, and will be lightweight.
Arch is something I installed on my desktop because I know I'll have the time to configure every little thing and solve any issues that arise.
