They're good in their own right, but not necessary to 52 and Final Crisis (you do need to read those as a pair to get the full story).
Also, if it's the artwork that caught your eye, the guy's name is Alex Ross. He's done some amazing covers for DC over the years, but he also illustrated the entire run of their mini-event Kingdom Come. I would highly recommend that as well. It's an elseworlds story so there's no prior reading required, and it's only 4 issues.
