Trenches and barbed wire. Corpses and burnt trees. Any second a yellowish cloud of gas could move your way and burn your skin away, and those guys weren't rotated to other fronts by the germans ... if you were sent to Verdun, you fought until death, the end of the war, or an injury put you out of commission. That's pretty apocalyptic, in my opinion, and would be a mighty fine wallpaper, and I'm sad I can't provide you with anything better than this one.
